Sculpture of award-winning Birmingham-Southern College Art Professor Jim Neel to be on exhibit at Savannah College of Art and Design
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Birmingham-Southern College Associate Professor of Art and Art History Jim Neel, the 2010 Southeastern College Art Conference Individual Artist’s Fellowship recipient, is being honored for his award with a solo exhibition during November at Savannah College of Art and Design’s Hall Street Gallery in Savannah, Ga.
The exhibit, “The Systems of Conflict,” will be on display Nov. 9-23 and is being held in conjunction with the 2011 SECAC Conference hosted at SCAD.
Neel was awarded the SECAC fellowship in October 2010 for his “Les Enfants de la Terre,” a series of sculptures in terracotta and iron that addresses the issue of child soldiers. The 1971 BSC graduate received a $3,000 award to apply toward the project.
Exhibited both in installation groups and as individuals in terracotta and iron, the representational figures of “Les Enfants de la Terre” are meant to address the use of children as soldiers by confronting the viewer with the diminutive scale and physical fragility of the young.
